We are two friends always craving a new adventure and on June 8th, 2011 we’ll be attempting our biggest one yet– a journey across America by cycle. The ride will begin along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay in Yorktown, Virginia, and from there, we will pedal the 4,262 mile TransAmerica bicycle trail across 10 states, including Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho and Oregon, ending our journey, or maybe just the first chapter, on the Pacific coast in Astoria, Oregon.
We have sold some of our most precious belongings, including a Jeep, a mattress and a chili pot, purchased two Surly bikes, a french press and a bear bell, and are ready to hit the road peddling, leaving the rat race behind. As of May 1st, 2011, our longest bike ride was a 45 mile trip to Marco Island in Florida, where the elevation change is about as dramatic as a ride on a marry-go-round . Thus, we have no experience when it comes to long distance cycling.
To prepare our bodies and minds for the challenging journey ahead, we will be using the foothills of the Appalachian mountains in Northern Virginia to train. We’ve also taken bike maintenance courses to help us get through any breakdowns on the road, and we’ve bought a ukulele for song and dance therapy. The uke has become our best friend, especially during those long nights we spend working on the computer. Regardless of all the preparations we’ve taken, we still feel completely unprepared, apprehensive about what lies ahead and fearful of the many saddle soars to come, and we love it.
Here we’ll be posting photos, videos and blogs about our adventures on and off the trail. So, look forward to seeing the exciting, the eccentric, the awe-inducing, the fascinating, and the inspiring stories we’ll be bringing to you during our journey into seeing America in a way that most people don’t get to. It’s America ByCycle.
